SBIMUN XV will not be collecting position papers from delegates.
The Argentinian Dictatorship, also known as The Dirty War, was a period in Argentine history in which a military regime seized governmental control in an attempt to end left-wing and communist influence. It lasted from March 24, 1976, when President Isabela Perón was ousted, to the regime's collapse in 1983. Led by Jorge Rafael Videla, this far-right nationalist group, known as the National Reorganization Process, persecuted leftists, Perónists, journalists, and other dissenters. Jewish people, students, left-wing organization members, and trade unionists were especially targeted. The regime also imposed censorship, closed the national congress, banned trade unions, and "disappeared" suspected political threats. Because of this, violence frequently broke out between the military and opposition groups such as the Montoneros. Journalism also played a crucial role, with some publications supporting the junta's propaganda and others choosing to speak out. The conflict claimed the lives of 10,000 to 30,000 people. The true extent of the devastation remains uncertain, but the echoes of this bloody period of Argentine history lives on today.
This committee is set in August of 1976, shortly after the military took power. It will be challenging and likely involves dealing with sensitive topics, so delegates should take that into consideration when researching this committee. However, it will also be incredibly rewarding and fun, as it is unlike previous Spec committees before it. It will take on a very nontraditional style and incorporate Press Corps as a part of committee. Meaning Press Corps will solely interact with the Argentinian Dictatorship committee. Everyone, including Press Corps delegates, will take on the character of someone in Argentina at this time. Delegates will strive to solve complex political disputes, protect humanitarian rights, and fight to maintain political power. The ultimate goal is to protect your country and your citizens and strive to find stability, and for those in the Press to report on your findings in a way that is authentic to your character.
