SBIMUN XV will not be collecting position papers from delegates.

The United Nations Security Council is one of the primary UN bodies with a mandate focused on maintaining international peace and security. As with many other conflicts in the mid-1900s, the Congo Crisis was a proxy conflict for the Cold War, acting as a platform for world powers to exercise their scope and influence in recently independent countries. In late June 1960, the Congo declared its independence from Belgium, but the declaration was only the start. A conflict including peacekeepers, succession, and coups would lead to the deaths of over 100,000 people during the five-year conflict and cause lasting damage in the region. Delegates in the UNSC will convene days after independence on July 1st of 1960, in an attempt to uphold the UNSC mandate during a Cold War, and to prevent that war from becoming hot. Please be aware that this is a dual delegate committee and will include both GA and crisis elements throughout the weekend.
